Donuts for dogs? You bet! Your dog is in for a real treat because I have developed a special Turmeric Dog Treats Recipe that will not only have your canine companion licking his (or her!) chops, but will help to fight inflammation at the same time. These are special turmeric Doggy Donuts!

These are obviously not your “run-of-the-mill” donuts. These are donuts with health benefits!

My Turmeric Dog Treats Recipe contain the superfoods turmeric and coconut oil and are free from any gluten, refined sugar and dairy. Let’s just call them a “doggy donut delight”!

Benefits of these Turmeric Donuts Include:

  • Turmeric: Turmeric is a true superfood because it contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory powerhouse. Curcumin has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for ages. It is gaining popularity and is widely studied in medicine for its anti-cancer, antioxidant, antineoplastic and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin actually works similarly to NSAIDs because it also inhibits the inflammatory mediators from creating more of them without damaging the gastrointestinal area. Curcumin may in fact help heal or prevent inflammatory conditions in the gut. See my article Benefits of Curcumin for Pets for more information.
  • Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is a plant-based saturated fat that is made up of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), also called Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs), which are more rapidly and easily digested, absorbed and utilized, producing a very different effect on the body than the more common Long-Chain Fatty Acids (LCFAs). Coconut oil provides excellent brain food for older dogs, helps fight fat in overweight animals and provides readily accessible energy for ill dogs. Lauric acid, the primary fatty acid in coconut oil, has been shown to destroy lipid-coated viruses, including herpes, HIV and influenza.
  • Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are a fantastic source of alpha-linolenic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid for dogs. Flaxseeds replace eggs in this recipe because many dogs have a food intolerance to eggs. If your dog does not have problems with eggs, feel free to substitute one whole egg for the flax egg in the recipe.
  • Apple sauce: Apple sauce contains the soluble fiber pectin, which helps coat and soothe the stomach. I’ve seen amazing results for dogs with digestive problems, including acid reflux and diarrhea, when we add some apple sauce to the diet.
